Burano

Saturday, October 4

On the ferry.

We are passing ...

... a monastery.

Ahh.

Land!

I see land!

Approaching the ...

... Island of Burano.

The local time ...

... is ...

12.15pm.

Here we are.

Welcome to Burano.

When we arrive,

I am standing behind

this girl wearing green stripes.

We are waiting to disembark.

We have been standing for

a few minutes when

she suddenly sits down ...

... revealing a

LARGE

number 24

right before my eyes.

24 = 42 = 21

Nice.

For Ryan.

Inversion

and Division.

I am speaking in

 low tones to Bryan,

"Ambil gambar."

Burano is also a fishing village.

Like Murano.

Famous for its ...

... picturesque scenery.

Legend has it that ...

... the houses were painted ...

... with vibrant colours ...

... so that fishermen ...

... could navigate their way ...

... through foggy nights  ...

... and help them ...

... return home safely.

The colours in Burano ...

... are colourful ...

... bold ...

... and distinctive.

This little island ...

... is well-known ...

... for its ...

... lace working art.

Yeah. Yeah.

I know. I know

It's not a lace photo.

Walk with me.

This lace tradition ...

... dates back to the

16th century.

Eh, what's happening

over there?

Looks like another ferry

has arrived.

So, at the height ...

... of its power ...

... Burano ...

... exported ...

... LACE ...

(Here it is.)

... throughout the world.

Enough History.

Have a gelato.

Take a break.

Back to class.

Today,

Burano is still reknown ...

... as the "Island of Lace."

I am intrigued ...

... with the ...

... colourful homes.

It's so - kindergarten.

I am taking photos ...

... all around myself ...

... whilst Bryan ...

... is at the ...

... gelato shop.

How do people eat ice cream

when it's so cold?

Take in the view.

The fashion looks like

something from the 70s.

Cafes ...

... and boutiques are scattered ...

... all over the island.

Let's go look for my keychain.

Souvenir from Burano.

Nice scarfs here too.

Big space ...

... to cater for bigger crowds

 during the summer time.

More lacey stuffs.

Reminds me of Mom's

 embroidered lacey tablecloths

in the estates.

We are heading towards ...

... the canal.

Look at that ...

... shocking pink house.

It's like Barbie's home.

Umbrellas in the background?

Bryan and I are telling

each other to

"Stand there."

"No no, you stand there."

"No. You."

I won.

We are trying to take ...

... as many photos ...

... as we can ...

... front to back,

left to right.

I am checking out the scarfs.

The material is so soft.

Strolling along.

What else have we here?

Ah,

Like

a

bridge

over

troubled

waters ...

(sing it like Simon & Garfunkel)

Troubled waters ...

... because ...

... the demand ...

... for lace ...

... has ...

... declined ...

... over the years.

High cost ...

... for ...

... handmade items ...

... and ...

... competition ...

... from ...

... machine-made ...

... lace ...

... from Asia ...

... has ...

... made it ...

... a challenge ...

... for Burano lace ...

... to compete ...

... in the market.

Burano lace was famous

around 1620 -1710.

Dylan, take note.

Kings and Queens,

nobles and royalties,

wore this lace in

their garments.

Especially ceremonial ones.

Golden thread lace

was a high-end luxury item.

Like a postcard.

Imagine ...

... yourself ...

... imprinted ...

... on a postcard.

That's the magic of Burano.

Like super-imposed.

It's time to ...

... return to the ferry.

I still have not bought

my keychain.

We are walking back ...

... but not without

getting ...

... a second gelato.

Take ...

... a good, long ...

... heavenly view ...

... of Burano ...

... and gelato- freeze

the moment ...

... for now.

Oh.

By the way ...

Did you know?

King Louis XIV of France,

known for his

extravagant fashion

and lavish dressing,

had a particular fondness

for high-quality lace.

Indeed,

lace was a symbol of

luxury,

power

and taste

in French society

during his era.

We watched the story of

Louis XIV

in the film "Versailles"

on Netflix

a few years back.

The Sun King.

History can be entertaining.

Walking back.

Snapping photos ...

... right ...

... middle ...

... left.

Lace display.

Think of Queen Elizabeth

and Queen Anne.

Ooh.

This is my favourite.

Sweet pink.

Bye-bye, Burano.

Oh. I got my keychain

from this shop ...

a few steps back.

Spectacular for postcard.

Arrived back on Venezia S.L.

at 4.15 pm.

Took train to Bologna

and arrived

at 6.45pm.

About 1 hour 50 minutes.

Taxi at 6.58pm.

658

19

8

Number plate :

419

48

444

Taxi came swiftly.

We barely waited 5 minutes

at the taxi stand.

I'm not surprised.

My signs are on track.

Apartment in Bologna.

Mugnaio Appartamento il.

Very new and nice.

Where is the kitchen?

I looked around.

No sign of a kitchen.

Ohhh.

I did not expect that.

So nice and neat.

Another brand new apartment,"

says Bryan.

Bathroom was perfect.
